en Fajardo. Tomamos la oportunidad en el mismo lugar para entrevistarlo al frente de
nuestras videocámaras para la producción de nuestro nuevo

y cortas lecciones sobre las reglas y tradiciones que rodean a la Décima puertorriqueña, y detalles de su larga

We visited the illustrious composer, troubadour, improviser, folklorist, singer and guitarist Joaquín Mouliert, and he treated to us to a delicious luncheon at the Don Esteban restaurant in Fajardo. We took the opportunity on the spot to interview him in front of our video cameras for the upcoming production of our new video, The Puerto Rican Décima. He also treated us to a comprehensive series of short lessons on the rules and traditions that surround the Puerto Rican Décima, and details of his long and outstanding career. |

invitaron a Toa Baja, a la casa del legendario guitarrista, Apolo
Ocasio (antiguo amigo y acompañante del Maestro Ladi, Ladislao Martínez). Pasamos
varias horas en la marquesina de la casa de don Polo, lugar donde también habían
invitado al magnífico guitarrista-cuatrista Ray Vázquez; el venerable
cantante Rafita Torres (quién cantó por años con Chuíto de Cayey); y
un niño de diez años, prodigio en el cuatro, Luis Sanz González. Oigan a Rafita (centro),
Polo (izquierda), Ray (derecha) y Polo (izquierda) en un corto fragmento de la presentacion informal de esa
tarde. Cantan Cerca de Cayey: una canción escrita, pero nunca grabada, por el
gran Chuito el de Cayey. Estén pendiente que esta es una grabación de campo, y no de
estudio. El miembro del Proyecto, David Morales, se puede oir cantando la voz alta en
el coro. |
We were invited to Toa Baja, to the home of the legendary
guitarist Apolo Ocasio (old friend and accompanist to the late
Maestro Ladí, Ladislao Martínez). We spent several hours in the covered
drive-up at don Polo's home, where they had also invited the extraordinary
cuatrista/guitarist Ray Vazquez; the venerable singer Rafita
Torres (who sang for many years with Chuito de Cayey); and a ten-year
old child prodigy on the cuatro, Luis Sanz Gonzalez Listen at left to Rafita (center) and Ray (right) and Polo (left) in a short fragment of an informal performance of that afternoon. They all sing Close to Cayey. Please note that this is a field recording and not a studio recording. The Cuatro Project researcher, David Morales, can be heard singing the high voice in the chorus. |

That same afternoon we asked Polo and Ray to play for us a selection of all
the seises that they could think of. Well, the played the themes of no less
that 21 seises plus a few other things. Listen to two of these. But you can access all 21 seis selections by Polo and Ray clicking on the link directly to the left. Not had enough? Here are 36 more seises (link directly at left) that Efrain played for us solo on his cuatro during an earlier 2004 tour to PR October 2004. Not enough yet? We have been able to digitize an old radio program broadcast in 1982 by the PR government station WIPR on the seises and aguinaldos played by Arturito Aviles and Paquito Lopez Cruz. También presente en la marquesina de Polo ese día estaba el prodigioso muchachito Luis Sanz González, joven de 10 años, tocando su cuatro a un nivel asombrosamente avanzado. Sus padres nos mostraron fotos del joven Luis durante presentaciones en Bellas Artes frente de una orquesta sinfónica y en el Capitolio de la isla. Realmente, fue un gran orgullo para nosotros y fuente de aliento que nuestras tradiciones se mantendrán fuertes en manos de las generaciones que nos siguen. | Also present in Polo's house was the prodigious 10-year old, Luis Sanz Gonzalez, playing his cuatro at a surprisingly advanced level. His parents showed us photos of the young Luis during concerts at the prestigious Bellas Artes theatre in front of a symphony orchestra, and in the Capitol building of the Island. Really, it was a moment of great pride for us to see that our traditions are being kept alive in the hands of generations that will follow us. |

Luis, encaminándolo e instruyéndolo. Juntos (con Ray en segundo cuatro) nos obsequiaron
con una serie de composiciones de Ladislao Martínez. Y no de sus más sencillas, sino
varias de sus más complejas-- como por ejemplo:

Apolo Ocasio has served as mentor for Luis, guiding and teaching him.
Together, with Ray playing second cuatro, they treated us to a series of
compositions by Ladislao Martinez. And not of his most simple, rather some
